Kaylan Dowdie’s Mother Accuses Attorney of Hypocrisy in Representation Choices

Veneshia Buckley, the mother of Kaylan Dowdie, has taken to social media to criticize prominent attorney Peter Champagnie, accusing him of selectively representing clients based on personal ties.

This comes after Champagnie publicly stated he would not represent the suspect in the recent murder of journalist Barbara Gayle, calling her a “dear friend.”

While Champagnie emphasized his belief that everyone deserves legal representation, he admitted he could not take this case due to personal reasons. Buckley, however, accused him of hypocrisy, pointing out that he previously represented individuals accused of attacking her daughter, leaving Kaylan permanently wheelchair-bound.

“When it suits you, you represent bad people because they’re your friends,” Buckley said. “Now you’re saying you won’t because your friend was killed. That’s hypocrisy.”

Buckley expressed frustration that her daughter’s case, now four years old, remains unresolved. She alleged corruption in the legal process, claiming that connections between the accused, detectives, and attorneys are delaying justice.

Despite acknowledging her mistake in allowing Kaylan to attend an illegal party the night of the attack, Buckley argued her daughter did not deserve the tragedy that changed her life forever.
