Veteran Dancehall artist Nardo Ranks, known for classics like Dem A Bleach, Burrup, and Rykers Island (featuring Cocoa Tea), has sadly passed away. The news was confirmed by reggae singer Red Fox and the Reggae music platform World A Reggae through Instagram on Sunday.
Nardo Ranks, born Gary Henderson, was raised in the East Kingston community of Dunkirk. His journey in music began at the age of 10, and by the mid-1980s, he was building his deejay skills on the Caveman sound system.
In 1989, he entered the Dancehall spotlight with Wha Happen Sound Boy, a collaboration with fellow Dunkirk native Wayne Wonder. His unique style and memorable hits made him a favorite on the local charts throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Later, Nardo Ranks moved to the United States, where he continued his career as both a deejay and an actor. His most recent work, a song titled Reggae Music, was shared on his Instagram in October, encouraging fans to stream it on all platforms.
Paying tribute, fellow artist Red Fox shared, “Saddened to hear the passing of Nardo Ranks. My condolences to his family and loved ones. R.I.P DJ.”
The cause of his passing has not yet been revealed. Nardo Ranks’ contributions to Dancehall will always be remembered.
