In a shocking incident, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning. The 50-year-old executive was entering the hotel around 6:45 AM when a masked gunman approached him from behind and opened fire at close range.
The shooter, who witnesses say had been waiting outside the hotel for several minutes, fired at least three rounds using a handgun equipped with a silencer. After the attack, the suspect fled on a bicycle, disappearing into nearby Central Park.
Police believe the killing was a targeted attack, citing the suspect’s behavior and the timing of the incident. Surveillance footage shows the shooter dressed in a hoodie with a gray backpack, but his face remains obscured.
Investigators later released an image captured at a Starbucks down the street, showing only the suspect’s eyes and the top of his nose above a mask.
At the scene, officers recovered three 9mm shell casings. The NYPD is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s arrest and is collaborating with UnitedHealthcare to explore possible motives, including recent threats or conflicts involving the company.
