A car attack at the Zhuhai Sports Center in southern China has left 35 people dead and at least 43 injured.
On Monday, a 62-year-old man, reportedly motivated by a personal dispute, drove his vehicle onto the stadium’s running track, targeting people who were there to exercise.
Local authorities believe the attack may have been spurred by a property disagreement following the driver's recent divorce. Witnesses described the vehicle barreling toward groups of walkers, joggers, and families enjoying the popular community space, striking multiple individuals in its path.
Attempts by the driver to flee were unsuccessful; he inflicted injuries upon himself and remains in a coma, making it impossible for police to conduct questioning.
China's leaders, including President Xi Jinping, expressed deep outrage over the incident, condemning it as a "vicious attack." President Xi has called for harsh penalties for the perpetrator and for extensive support for those affected. The incident has brought the community together in grief, with residents laying flowers and tributes at the stadium to honor the victims.
