Heavy Rains Trigger Search for Missing Couple in St. Catherine

Following torrential rains on Tuesday, authorities in St. Catherine have launched a search for a couple whose vehicle was swept away by floodwaters. The severe weather, caused by Tropical Storm Rafael, led to flooding in multiple communities, with areas like Worthy Park particularly affected.

A video circulating online shows a white pickup truck floating down a submerged road, though the occupants aren’t visible due to heavily tinted windows. According to TVJ News, the incident occurred around 4 p.m. as the driver attempted to cross the flooded road. The vehicle was still visible by nightfall, but search efforts have been challenging due to poor water visibility.

The Jamaica Defence Force’s Coast Guard has since joined local police in the search. Superintendent Hopton Nicholson, who leads the St. Catherine North police division, noted that a pair of Crocs believed to belong to one of the occupants was found nearby. Community members attempted to help, but conditions made it difficult.

As search efforts continue, authorities urge residents to stay vigilant and avoid flooded areas whenever possible.
