Popular dancehall selector Foota Hype recently addressed Vybz Kartel in a live video, claiming that he deserves credit for the term “STR8,” which Kartel has now used to brand his new rum, “STR8 Vybz.”
According to Foota, “STR8” originated from his own creativity, making it his intellectual property. He emphasized the importance of reaching out, saying, “Link me before it’s too late,” and stated he may take legal action if he isn’t contacted about the brand.
Beyond the brand dispute, Foota also made suggestions for Kartel’s upcoming December 31 show. He believes there should be an “Alliance” tribute segment to honor artists who helped shape Kartel’s early career, including Bounty Killer, Wayne Marshall, and Bling Dawg. “The Kartel show can’t exist without Bounty Killer,” Foota argued, recognizing these figures as pivotal to dancehall history.
Foota also took credit for MC Nuffy’s inclusion in the show’s lineup, claiming that after he voiced his support for Nuffy, the event organizers reconsidered.
Foota hopes his current suggestions will likewise be acknowledged and believes these changes will make the show a more powerful tribute to the roots of dancehall.
