Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei has passed away following a violent domestic altercation. Her ex-boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, allegedly attacked Cheptegei on September 1, setting her ablaze after a dispute over property. The runner sustained burns to 80% of her body and tragically succumbed to her injuries a few days later due to multiple organ failure.

Ndiema, who also suffered severe burns during the incident, died from his injuries at a local hospital despite extensive medical efforts. According to hospital officials, he developed respiratory failure due to severe airway burns and sepsis.
Rebecca Cheptegei, 33, recently competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics and had represented Uganda in numerous international competitions, including the World Athletics Championships and IAAF World Cross Country Championships. She also set a national record in the marathon with a time of 2:22:47 after winning the 2022 Padova Marathon in Italy.
Her tragic death has shocked the athletic community. The Uganda Athletics Federation expressed deep sorrow, highlighting the devastating impact of domestic violence.
Cheptegei was laid to rest in her hometown in Uganda's Bukwo District.
