According to the Rockdale County Fire Department, the fire started when a malfunctioning sprinkler caused water to mix with a reactive chemical at the plant.
The Environmental Protection Agency and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division later detected chlorine in the air, which posed a health risk to residents.

While no injuries were reported, the fire did cause the closure of Interstate 20 for much of Sunday. Though the highway has since reopened, several local roads remain closed as authorities and BioLab, a division of KIK Consumer Products, continue to assess the situation.
