A Florida woman received a sentence on Tuesday, consisting of a month in prison followed by three months of home confinement. This punishment was due to her involvement in stealing and selling President Joe Biden’s daughter’s diary to the conservative group Project Veritas four years ago. Judge Laura Taylor Swain, presiding over the case in Manhattan federal court, condemned the actions of Aimee Harris from Palm Beach, Florida, labeling them as "despicable."
Harris had confessed in 2022 to receiving half of the $40,000 payment made by Project Veritas for personal items belonging to Ashley Biden, the president's daughter. Alongside her co-defendant Robert Kurlander, who is awaiting sentencing, Harris pleaded guilty to conspiracy to transport stolen property across state lines.
Defense attorney Anthony Cecutti argued against a prison sentence, highlighting his client's traumatic past, including long-term domestic abuse and sexual trauma, and her dedication to caring for her children while recovering from these experiences.
Addressing the court with a lawyer for Ashley Biden present, Harris expressed remorse for making Biden's childhood and life public and apologized to her. Judge Swain pointed out that Harris and Kurlander had initially attempted to sell Ashley Biden's belongings to then-President Donald Trump's 2020 presidential campaign before turning to Project Veritas.
Swain mentioned Harris's greed and desire to influence the political landscape as motivations for her actions. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Sobelman advocated for a prison sentence, emphasizing Harris's disregard for the law and the justice system, stating that Ashley Biden was the true victim in the case.
According to Sobelman, Harris stole various items belonging to Ashley Biden in the summer of 2020, including her diary, digital storage card, books, clothing, and luggage, with the intention of profiting from them and damaging Ms. Biden's father politically.
Harris was instructed to report to prison in July but declined to comment as she left the courthouse. Likewise, Ashley Biden's lawyer refrained from making a statement, although he had submitted a letter to the judge on behalf of his client the day before, which had not yet been entered into the court record.
