Kim Kardashian’s interior design choices are facing intense scrutiny once again. The estate of minimalist contemporary artist Donald Judd recently filed a lawsuit against Kardashian, accusing her of promoting “cheap knockoffs” of his furniture designs.
In a video, Kardashian is seen praising what she refers to as “amazing” Donald Judd tables that seamlessly blend with the rest of her furniture. Donald Judd, known for his minimalist approach and emphasis on clean shapes and industrial materials, created iconic pieces like the La Mansana Table and Chair 84 in 1982, which are highly regarded among designers and collectors. These original designs are still manufactured and sold by the Judd Foundation, albeit at a high price—$90,000 for the table and $9,000 for each chair.
However, Kardashian’s tables and chairs are not authentic Judd pieces, according to the lawsuit. The Judd Foundation alleges trademark infringement, copyright infringement, unfair competition, false advertising, and false endorsement of the knockoff items. They argue that consumers were misled into believing Kardashian’s furniture was genuine.
Clements Design, the interior design firm Kardashian collaborated with for her Skkn office space, denies claiming the pieces were authentic Judd designs. They assert that there are noticeable differences between their designs and Judd’s originals. Furthermore, they claim efforts were made to resolve the issue amicably but were met with resistance from the Judd Foundation.
The lawsuit also criticizes the quality of Kardashian’s knockoffs, suggesting they were made from plywood, a material not authorized by the Judd Foundation. The foundation offered to replace the counterfeit items with authentic pieces at a discounted rate if Kardashian retracted her statements and edited the video. However, Kardashian’s representatives allegedly only offered to promote the Judd Foundation on social media and issue a retraction in the video caption, which the foundation rejected.
Donald Judd, known for his attention to detail and material quality, was very selective about who could manufacture and sell his designs. Only a few authorized galleries and stores have the privilege of carrying his furniture, emphasizing the exclusivity and craftsmanship associated with his brand.
